The Artist.

Rufus Ogundele

Rufus Ogundele was born in Oshogbo. In 1963 he participated in Denis Williams’ workshop organized by Ulli and Georgina Beier. From the beginning, Ogundele worked on a large scale initially using emulsion paint, later developing his skills as a printmaker (linocut technique) under the guidance of Georgina Beier.

Ogundele combined the European artistic techniques he developed under Williams’ and especially Beier’s tutelage with the teachings of traditional Yoruba culture. His subject matter attests to his strong beliefs, which are rooted in Yoruba culture and life.

His work has been exhibited in Nigeria, U.S.A., U.K., Germany, Ghana, Kenya, Czechoslovakia, Canada and Japan. In 1966-68 his works were shown in a Smithsonian Institution travelling exhibition, and at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London.

About the artwork

Intertwining lines of privilege mark the soft curves of struggle—a landscape as diverse as humanity itself. Bold strokes of culture clash and blend into new shades of understanding.

These threads—some wide with history, others thin with gossamer beginnings—have intersected through the art piece, weaved in and out, tangling, pulling apart again, as each interaction marks its impression. Yet amidst all this complexity, one center does emerge. It's where all the lines converge, all colors mix. A mosaic, not a melting pot—each piece distinct, integral to the whole.

This is where we meet: in our common humanity. In laughter that does not need translation, in tears that speak a universal language, in the simple act of reaching out.
